Sea Of Creepy Monsters

Maybe it's the inner creature geek in me, but I giggled my whole way through this doc. Quite possibly one of my favourite documentaries! Oooh errr.
( I don't think this plays outside the US so you may have to reload page with a proxy if you happen to not be in that general area :) )

Scientists Find Squid Like Cypress Hill

Many cephalopods have the ability to quickly control and change their chromatophores, skin’s pigmented cells, to reflect light. Each chromatophore has tiny muscles that contract to reveal the pigment underneath.

Researchers at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole attached a suction electrode to the squid’s fin nerve and connected the electrode to an iPod nano, which worked as a stimulator. The iPod plays music by converting digital music into a small current that is sent to magnets in the earphones; these are connected to cones, which vibrate and produce sound. In this experiment, the researchers removed the earbuds and placed the wire into the squid’s fin nerve. When the iPod sent bass frequencies (less than 100Hz), the axons had enough charge to fire an action potential. This caused the muscles in the chromatophores to contract, i.e. change colours.
This video is a view through an 8x microscope zoomed in on the dorsal side of the squid’s fin—and yes, the chromatopheres seem to be dancing. Insane :)

Dust That Sings

What do we know about time? Would if be cruel to tell an adult mayfly that it only has one afternoon, would it still fly as far and as high as it could, might it fly further and higher than usual, or would it forget about it's wings and sit on the water, head bowed, sufficiently traumatised to invent religion?

One Man Band

Pretty Impressive!

Big Brother Mars Edition

It's a question I've often contemplated, given the option, if you could go to Space, but never come back, would you go?? I've put a lot of thought into it, the beauty of the universe intrigues me so much, my imagination has always ran wild about witnessing the earth rise, all the things I'd see and the emotions I would feel if I ever got the chance. But can you imagine coming from a far distant planet, landing on earth and witnessing all mother nature has to offer, our sun rise and sunsets, there's really enough that should keep us in awe for our entire lifespans, and so I've been doing my best to appreciate all the beauty that people tend to take for granted that we are lucky enough to have in our backyard on this tiny little pale blue dot we call home....

A Dutch company aims to land humans on Mars by 2023 as the first step toward establishing a permanent colony on the Red Planet.

The project, called Mars One, plans to drop four astronauts on Mars in April 2023. New members of the nascent colony will arrive every two years after that, and none of the Red Planet pioneers will ever return to Earth.

To fund this, Mars One says it will stage a media spectacle, an inter-planetary reality TV show, bounced straight into our living rooms.

"This project seems to be the only way to fulfill humanity's dream to explore outer space. It is going to be an exciting experiment. Let's get started......"
